Recently we saw that, Joomla project announced the release of Beta1 version of the upcoming Joomla 3.5. The Beta release is said to have several major and minor changes so it will surely be a great way to start playing with the new features.
As we all know, Beta version is only for testing purposes and it should not be used on production servers. So if you are planning to give a try with Joomla 3.5, the best thing to do for now is to run a clean installation on your test server or just create a copy of your existing environment before installing the beta.
Once the actual release hits, you will be able to upgrade your live installation normally.
Here are some new features we can expect in Joomla 3.5:
#1. Joomla Update Notification
This new feature lets you specify a list of email addresses using comma as a delimiter. This will then provide you the information about each and every Joomla update. You don’t have to keep an eye on joomla.org or social media channels for notifications of latest updates; the notification message will directly be sent to your email inbox.
#2. Improved back-end views
In the Beta version of Joomla 3.5, we’ll see some new columns in the backend views like banners categories, contacts and newsfeeds. This indicates items that are published, archived, deleted and trashed, so we don’t have to switch layouts to check the number of articles in trash as we can now see it directly in the categories view.
#3. More overrides
We know that, we can overwrite almost every view in Joomla but not the CSS of backend templates. Earlier, there was no way to add extra style sheets to the backend template because the customization options were very limited. But now with the release of Isis template, it’s been said that the user styles will be included.
All that you need to do is to create a custom.css file and place it inside the template directory in css sub directory and then the template will be able to load the styles automatically.
#4. No Backward Compatibility
The main objective of new development roadmap was keeping Joomla backward compatible with the extensions and plugins released earlier. But because of the changes in PHP 7, core Joomla class string had to be renamed as StringHelper. This means that the promise of backward compatibility is broken and it’s not because of anything the Joomla team did. Without this change, Joomla wouldn’t be able to run on PHP 7.
